How to Play
-
Number of Players Required: Capture the Flag is best played with a larger group.
Ideally, you’ll have at least 6 players, but more is always merrier! -
What You’ll Need
- Two flags (bandanas, t-shirts, or other markers can be used)
- A large playing area (a park, field, or backyard works well)
- Markers to define the boundaries of each team’s territory (cones, rope, or natural landmarks)
-
Gameplay
- Divide the playing area into two equal territories.
- Each team hides their flag within their own territory, preferably in a somewhat concealed but accessible location.
- Players try to cross into the opposing team’s territory to capture their flag.
- If a player is tagged while in the opposing team’s territory, they are sent to ‘jail’. Jail can be a designated area or simply require the player to freeze in place.
- Teammates can free captured players from jail by tagging them.
- Once a player captures the opposing team’s flag, they must return it to their own territory without being tagged.
- If a player carrying the flag is tagged, they must drop the flag where they were tagged and return to jail.
Winning Criteria: The team that successfully captures the other team’s flag and brings it back to their own territory first wins.
Alternatively, you can set a time limit and the team with the captured flag at the end wins.
Estimated Playtime: A game of Capture the Flag typically lasts between 15 and 30 minutes.
The duration can vary depending on the size of the playing area and the number of players.
Make it Your Own
- Vary the size of the playing area to adjust the difficulty.
- Introduce different jail rules, such as requiring captured players to complete a task before being freed.
- Add obstacles to the playing area to make it more challenging.
- Create variations on tagging, like requiring two tags to send someone to jail.
