Code Names: A Spymaster's Challenge in Wordplay!
Code Names is a thrilling party game where rival spymasters try to guide their teammates to contact their secret agents hidden amongst a grid of seemingly random words. Clever clues and creative thinking are key to victory!
Description: Code Names is a social word association game that pits two teams of spies against each other in a battle of wits. Players are divided into red and blue teams, and each team has a designated spymaster. The core gameplay revolves around a set of double-sided cards featuring a grid of 25 random words. Each word on the card secretly represents an agent codename, with some belonging to the red team, some to the blue team, and one being the deadly assassin! The spymasters know the identities of all the agents (and the assassin) on the grid but their teammates do not. The goal of the game is for each spymaster to guide their team to guess all their agents’ codenames before the other team finds theirs, all while avoiding the assassin.

How to Play:
- Number of Players: 4-8+ players (Ideally at least 6 players for optimal fun)
- What You’ll Need:
- Code Names Game: The game includes a set of double-sided clue cards featuring grids of random words, red and blue agent cards, a neutral bystander card (representing innocent words), an assassin card, and an instruction booklet.
- Gameplay:
- Set Up the Grid: Shuffle the double-sided clue cards and place one face-up in the center of the table. This grid of words will be the battlefield where your agents are hiding.
- Team Up: Players are divided into red and blue teams, and each team chooses a player to be their spymaster. The spymasters know the secret identities of all the agents (and the assassin) based on the words on the grid. 3. Spymasters Give Clues: Each round, a spymaster takes a turn giving a one-word clue that can connect to multiple words on the grid. The clue can be a synonym, a rhyme, or even a category. The key is to cleverly link your clue to as many of your team’s agents as possible while avoiding words that might lead your team to guess the assassin.
- Teammates Guess: The spymaster’s teammate(s) try to guess which words on the grid their spymaster is referring to. They can guess one word at a time, but they must stop guessing once they guess an agent from the opposing team (a wrong guess) or the assassin (an automatic loss for the team).
- Reveal and Score: Once a guess is made, the corresponding card is flipped over to reveal its identity (red agent, blue agent, bystander, or assassin). If it’s a red agent, the team scores a point and continues guessing until they make a wrong guess or run out of guesses for that round. The gameplay then switches to the other team’s spymaster giving clues for their agents.
- Win or Lose: The first team to successfully identify all their agents on the grid wins the game! However, if a team accidentally guesses the assassin card, they lose immediately.
Winning Criteria: The winning team is the first to successfully identify all their secret agents on the grid without accidentally guessing the assassin.
Estimated Playtime: 15-30 minutes
Make it Your Own:
- Advanced Play: The base game offers plenty of fun, but there are also advanced rules for experienced players that add complexity, such as allowing double-agent words or limiting the number of guesses per round.
- Themed Play: For an extra twist, choose a theme for your game and use online resources to find word lists that align with that theme. For example, a music-themed game could have agents represented by song titles or band names.
- Digital Versions: There are also digital versions of Code Names available for mobile devices and tablets, offering a convenient way to play the game on the go.
