How to Play:
- Number of Players: 2+ (Works best in teams of 2 or more, but can be played individually)
- What You’ll Need:
- A timer (optional, can use a phone timer)
- Pieces of paper and pens (to write down words or phrases if playing with teams)
- A dictionary (optional, for finding new words or settling disputes)
- Gameplay:
- Decide on playing with teams or individually: Charades can be played with teams competing against each other or individually.
- Choose a word or phrase: If playing with teams, one player from the opposing team can silently write down a word or phrase on a piece of paper and show it to the actor on their team. If playing individually, you can take turns picking words from a dictionary, a pre-made list, or drawing them from a deck of cards.
- Act it Out!: The actor has a set amount of time (usually 1-2 minutes) to act out the word or phrase using only body language and facial expressions. No speaking, mouthing words, or singing is allowed.
- Guessing: Their teammates (or the opposing team if playing individually) try to guess the word based on the actor’s performance. They can shout out guesses or ask clarifying questions (without revealing the answer).
- Points and Rounds: If the team guesses the word correctly within the time limit, they get a point. Play continues with turns rotating between teams or players acting out new words.
- Winning: The team with the most points at the end of a predetermined number of rounds wins (if playing with teams), or the player with the most correctly guessed words wins (if playing individually).
Winning Criteria: T The team with the most points after all rounds have been played wins the game (if playing with teams), or the player with the most correctly guessed words wins (if playing individually).
Estimated Playtime: Highly variable depending on the number of players, number of rounds, and difficulty of words. Can range from 20 minutes to several hours.
Make it Your Own: Minor Changes for a Different Experience
- Categories: Choose themes for words or phrases, like movies, books, professions, or famous people.
- Time Limits: Adjust the time limit based on the difficulty of the words and the number of players guessing.
- Act it Out Variations: For an extra challenge, try acting out emotions, proverbs, or even song titles.
- Reverse Charades: One person describes a word or phrase to the actor, who then has to act it out for the rest of the players to guess.
